Director of Batiks

Riley Blake Designs is a leader in the quilting and fabric industry, known for our commitment to high-quality design, vibrant collections, and innovation in textiles. We are seeking a highly experienced and creative Director of Batiks to lead the development and execution of our batik collections. This is a unique opportunity to guide a key product category in a collaborative and design-forward environment.

Position Summary

The Director of Batiks will be responsible for overseeing the full batik development lifecycle—from concept to production. This includes the design and curation of unique batik fabric collections, managing production relationships, ensuring quality control, and aligning with the broader brand vision of Riley Blake Designs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of original batik fabric collections aligned with Riley Blake Designs' aesthetic and strategic direction
  • Collaborate with in-house and freelance artists, designers, and mills to create innovative, marketable batik patterns, specifically can create designs for tjaps
  • Manage and oversee the batik production process, including wax-resist dyeing, color development, and textile finishing
  • Source and maintain vendor relationships in key batik-producing regions (e.g., Indonesia)
  • Ensure quality standards, timelines, and production requirements are met for all batik collections
  • Monitor trends in color, technique, and pattern within the batik and quilting industries
  • Contribute to marketing, catalog, and sales team efforts by providing product insights and visual content
  • Travel as needed for vendor visits, trade shows, and sourcing opportunities

Qualifications

  • Experience in textile design and product development with a strong focus on batik
  • In-depth knowledge of the traditional and modern batik-making process, including wax application, dyeing, and stamping techniques
  • Proven ability to develop cohesive, commercially successful fabric collections
  • Strong portfolio showcasing batik or textile design work
  • Excellent communication and project management skills
  • Ability to work cross-functionally in a collaborative environment

Preferred

  • 5-7 years of experience working directly with batik artisans or mills in Southeast Asia
  • Knowledge of the quilting and home sewing market
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent design tools
  • Bachelor’s degree in Textile Design, Fine Arts, or related field
  • Ideal candidate would live in Utah
